_ HASSAN BAKO
ALBABA QUARTERS, KATSINA.
As a matter of reality and indeed in years to come, late President of the federal republic of Nigeria Umaru Musa Yar,adua will ever remain fresh in our memory, especially to people of Katsina state where the late leader hailed due to largely an indelible and enviable positive records he bequeathed between 1999-2010 both as governor and later as president of the federal republic of Nigeria.Indeed if one may recall the late President Yar,adua departed to the world of great beyond on the 5th May,2010 fallowing protracted illness and after spending 8 years as governor of Katsina state and 3 years as President of the federal republic of Nigeria. Thus as the late leader clocked 15 solid years since he was committed to the mother earth this year 2025 it become imperative to put pen to paper in order to refresh our memories on some of the legacies bequeathed by the late President Umar Yar,adua but more specipecally in Katsina state where he held forte for eight years (1999-2007) .Intrestingly,at the on set of his administration as governor of Katsina state, there were serious apprehensions and doubt's and some quarters misgivings as to the ability and capability of the late leader to deliver the much cherished Democratic dividends to the electorates.Such feelings and thoughts was because for 6 months his administration did not shakes or move a stone in any part of the state, thus pushing some people to be gnashing their teeth as to why they voted the man Yar,adua as their governor. However by the beginning of the year 2000, the late President then as governor surprised his critics and doubters as the transparent, prudent, and careful handling of state resources through decent spendings put smiles on the faces of the electorates and other people of the state.Fundamentally, key areas of education, health ,water supply, roads, agriculture, housing and infrastructure development witnessed gigantic progress between 1999-2007 when the late president Yar,adua served for two terms as Chief executive of Katsina state.
In the education sector for instance, apart from massive rehabilitations, upgrade and renovations of primaries, secondary schools and even tertiary institutions, the then governor Umaru Musa Yar,adua,s administration started to embark on the construction paper upstairs in schools especially in the urban and semi- urban citeis and towns to decongest the classes due to overcrowded populations of pupils and students on annual basis. Thus,as at the end of 8 years as governor of Katsina state,no single local government area out the 34 LGAs was Left unattended to by the latters administration. In fact,to crown his efforts in the education sector governor and later late President Yar,adua made sure that a state owned university now renamed after him was established to cater for the admission needs of.state indigenes in pursuit of university education. Thus in 2005 the technical committee for the implementation of the university project under the leadership of former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission_ NUC and re known literalist Professor Munzali Jubril handed over a well articulated as well as designed program of action for the university take- off and development and happily enough the story now after two decades is quite encouraging and heartwarming as the Umaru Musa Yar,adua university- UMYU had been meeting the admission needs of Katsina state indigenes and beyond.
